How much should I expect to pay for Website design?
ByI’m setting up a new business, and just need a ballpark figure (in £’s) for how much I can expect to be charged for help in designing and installing a website? Is it charged per hour of designers time, or depending on how complex the site is (I just want a basic one for now)? And where is the best place to start to find somebody who can design it? And how long can I expect it to take to be up and running?

Most professional designers as I understand it from their blogs give you a quote based on what you want done (I am not a professional designer though I know enough to do my own sites). You could probably google it….there’s many pro designers out there. How long it takes is really based on two things. 1) How complex you want your site to be 2) How nit picky you are being with your site.
One last piece of advice, if the designer did something a certain way there is probably a reason for it. Even if you dislike it, your customers probably would like it for a multitude of reasons. Remember: the designer for the most part has the end-user’s (your customers) best interests at heart.

Well I did a website for 2 people and charged 300 dollars, but that wass cheap because I was just doing it for fun and experience (See sources of websites i have made). For some like the ones in the sources I made by real pros you would be looking at around 500-1500 pounds probably.
It could take a week at a minimum. I could design for you if you want (contact me).

If you were to hire me I’d present 2 custom designs, build you a nice SEO friendly xhtml/css template out of the one you prefer, integrate it into wordpress and charge you $3500-$6000 depending on specifics (and it would be mobile phone friendly too).
I’d also throw in an email newsletter template and give you a few ideas on how to build your list (both online and with comment cards and wait staff incentives to capture emails in-store). I’d also give you a few ideas on how to split your list into different customer behavior types and what kind of content you should deliver to those segments.
I could also help you get listed on the free local directories that matter and keep you away from the ones that don’t. Maybe help out a bit with a locally focused google AdWords campaign.
The website is just part of the online marketing toolkit, and of the three I’ve mentioned (email marketing, search marketing, website) the least important for your in my opinion.

Hi, I usually recommend that the customer does some research for themselves, ie take a look around the Internet for a similar business to yours and look for a page layout that you like and you have a ready made template. Make a note of the site address then you can ask for a similar design. Count how pages and links there are and compare it to you own needs. How many pages and functionality will affect the cost. If you have some basic knowledge, when you have a web page open right click on the page and choose ‘View page source’ and copy that into a Notepad file, name it MY.html and save it. Then open it with your browser.
Once you have a good idea what you want you can get a price. Or maybe do it yourself. As a starter I would say £300 for the first page and then whatever else is added after that. If there is a University near you, ask around for an IT student who would do it for you, I did quite a few when I was at Uni. for pocket money. Also you might find a student to do it as a Project for submission in their final year.

The complexity and size of the site will have a large bearing on its cost as will whether it is designed from scratch or from templates.
There many web design businesses in the UK that will provide you with a four page site for about £400.00, built from template designs.
How long will it take? That again depends on size and complexity and to an extent work rate and work load of the designer. A good designer may have many clients requesting their services.
Many hosting providers have their own template driven online site builders. You may find it beneficial to use one of these to get your site up and running quickly.
Alternatively you could purchase a graphical WYSIWYG site builder program like Dreamweaver or WebPlus. WebPlus is available in a free version which though limited will gie you an idea of how it works.
Dreamweaver:

WebPlus X2 (latest)

Free version

Also it may be better to decide on a hosting company before you have your site designed as then the designer will know what scripts are allowable by that host and if any extra scripts need to be uploaded.
