One of the biggest problems with digital camera performance is getting the data out of the camera and into the memory card. The faster this transfer can happen, the faster the camera can perform. With the prevelance of higher resolutions in the cameras the problem gets even worse because the image files being written are a lot larger than in the past.

To deal with this issue the memory card industry and the camera industry have collaborated to develop faster cards. The SDHC card is the product of this work.

The newer cameras will specify in their specs that they use the HC versions. If you have regular SD cards from a previous camera, they will work in the new cameras with no problem but you won’t get good performance because it will take the camera a lot longer to write its data. So it makes more sense to use the high speed cards in the new cameras.

If you have an older camera that makes no mention of the high speed card there’s no point buying an HC card for it, the odds are the camera can’t read it or write to it. And even if it could, you’d gain no advantage because the older cameras can’t write data as quickly as the card can accept it. So if you have an older camera stick with the regular SD cards.

I hope that helps a little.

SD Is older, and supports sizes up to 2GB.
SDHC is newer and faster, and supports sizes over 2GB.

SDHC is better, but they cannot be used in SD slots. (However SD cards can be used in SDHC slots).
